A band which formed in Bury will be returning home for a charity gig following the death of a friend who died after suffering with cancer.

We The North will be performing at town centre record shop cafe, Wax and Beans, on Saturday, January 21.

The band will perform in aid of The Christie Charity and in memory of their friend, Callum Powell.

Callum was aged 27 when his stage 4 gastro-oesophageal cancer was discovered and he died around 12 months later.

Ryan Corcoran, 26, who plays the drums in the three-piece act, said Callum was the nicest guy you could have ever met.

He said: "I met him through work and we bonded over the fact that we both went to Leeds Festival 2015.

"We became good friends which helped us brush over the fact that he was a Liverpool fan and I was a Manchester United fan.

"He loved travelling, going to music festivals and being among friends and family.

"He was the easiest person to have a conversation with and probably the nicest guy you could ever meet."

As thanks to Christie's for their help after Callum's diagnosis, all ticket profits from their gig will be donated.

The band say “it's important to give back when you are able to”.

We The North, made up of Joshua Owens-Tomlinson, 29, Dan Smithson, 27, and Ryan Corcoran, 26, say they are excited about coming back to perform in Bury.

Joshua, who plays bass and sings in the band, praised Ben Soothill from Wax and Beans for helping them put on the gig.

He said: “It's been such a long time since we have had an opportunity to play in Bury so we are looking forward to this 'homecoming' show.

“We have all been to Wax and Beans as customers and Dan is particularly fond of it as he collects vinyl and loves coffee. I think he would live there if it was possible.”

Joshua said: “The reason we went with Christie's was due to the help they have given to friends and family of Dan and Ryan.

“The charity was absolutely fantastic with his friend so the focus of this show is honouring his memory.”

Redwall Studios and Sheldon Jolly will be offering their equipment and services for free.

Lost in Transit and Alan Jacob will also be supporting the band in the gig.

A We The North spokesman added: “It's always in our hearts to do good and we are hoping that we can use our music to start doing that.”

The band added that so far things have fallen together nicely and they hope the night goes just well.

Tickets are priced between £6 and £13 and the gig at the Market Street venue will take place at 7.30pm on the night.
