A cannabis farm was discovered and residents were evacuated after a fire broke out at a home in Bury yesterday afternoon, Sunday.

Emergency services were sent to Chesham Road at around 1.30pm after a fire broke out in the roof space of a property.

The blaze was extinguished by firefighters while neighbours were asked to leave their homes as a precaution.

Police, the council, Cadent Gas and Electricity North West were also involved in dealing with the incident. 

No injuries or arrests have been reported.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Just after 1.30pm yesterday, Sunday, we received the first of several reports about a fire at a mid-terraced domestic property on Chesham Road, Bury.

“Fire engines from across Greater Manchester were mobilised to the incident, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked hard to tackle the fire, which involved the roof space of the property, using four hose reels and other specialist equipment.

“Crews worked alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police, Cadent Gas, Electricity North West, and Bury Council at the scene, and remained in attendance throughout the afternoon and evening.”

The cause of the fire has not yet been released.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesperson added: "At around 2pm on Sunday, officers from GMP’s Bury district attended a property on Chesham Road in Bury that had caught fire.

"Officers attended to support Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service after they reported that there was a suspected cannabis farm at the property.

"Officers have located a cannabis farm that had caught fire and as a precaution, nearby houses have been evacuated as per standard procedure.

"There is a scene in place at the location with no disruption to the wider area."
