A longstanding traffic problem was in the process of being resolved when this photo was taken in 1970.
Ramsbottom Council had agreed to spend £30,000 to improve Peel Hall Road at Summerseat, effectively the main access road to the village as the road to Walmersley was closed to heavy traffic.
The existing roadway was being doubled in width and a narrow hairpin bend into Railway Street was being straightened out.
This picture was taken from Higher Summerseat looking towards Holcombe showing the road widening work underway.
