A former Mayor of Bury has been awared The Freedom of the Borough of Bury for his lifetime dedication and service to the town.
Roy Walker served as a former ward councillor for 39 years and Mayor from 1997 to 1998.
Me Walker, who served as councillor in Church Ward was honoured yesterday at a special Town Hall service.
Described as a ‘legend’ who knew everybody, Mr Walker's 39 years as a councillor were praised by friends, other councillors and opposition party members.
Cllr Eamonn O'Brien, the Leader of Bury Council, said: “His length of service is a testament to the service he gave for our borough and this award also recognises his incredible commitment to public service and duty.”
Dubbed the ‘best speaker at any meeting’, councillors spoke, in turn, to offer gratitude for his service and applauded his kind and inquisitive nature.
Speaking after the award, Mr Walker expressed his own thanks but remained humble.
He said: “I worked hard, but I didn’t expect to get an award for it, it was never about that.
“I've had the pleasure of being in these roles and I thank all the residents of Church Ward who re-elected me through the good and not-so-good times.
“It has always been a privilege to serve them and address their concerns.”
