IT has been a week to remember for Bury AFC after making it back-to-back league wins and sealing an historic victory in the FA Vase.
Andy Welsh’s side followed up last Wednesday’s dramatic 3-2 win at Longridge Town - secured thanks to two injury time goals - with a 2-0 win against Abbey Hey to reach the fourth round of the FA Vase for the first time in the club’s history.
And a magnificent seven days were rounded off with a 2-0 win against Barnoldswick Town on Tuesday night - a game lit up by Harry Brazel’s superb diving header. Welsh was delighted with an 11th league win of the season ahead of Saturday’s trip to Winsford Town at an earlier 1.30pm kick off due to England’s World Cup quarter final clash with France.
“Fantastic to get the win, we are playing catch-up but we strike that one down and we move on,” Welsh told the club’s website.
“Like I said last week at Longridge, the league form is important and it is important to get those runs together and I thought it was one of those performances where we worked really hard for it.”
Welsh admitted Barnoldswick made it hard work for them but he was pleased to see Bury take their chances - especially Brazel’s diving header from Matty Williams’ superb cross.
He said: “Matty has had a number of crosses in to the box when he finds himself in those positions. He does get on the ball a lot and he picked out a sweet ball for H (Harry Brazel) and a fantastic header.
He added: “I think we had to work out the puzzle...make sure that we don’t concede and make sure that we are creating the chances. There weren’t many but the main thing was that when we did get the opportunities we put them away.”
Attentions now turn to Saturday’s trip to Winsford who were beaten 2-0 at home by Charnock Richard on Monday.
Welsh said: “I am sure they will be wanting to get back on track and we know it is going to be a tough pitch, it has taken a little of hammer like pitches do this time of the year so we are going to have to be mindful of that.”
