When it comes to taking a risk, most people would play it safe and let a golden opportunity pass them by. After all, why make such a dangerous choice when you can stay in your comfort zone?
However, this was not the case for a young Steve Locket when 12 years ago he took his son to a local football club as a player on a team for the first time. After a while of attending his child's sessions, Mr. Locket realized that the coach of the team was leaving. He then was faced with a choice: take a risk or play it safe. And just like that, Mr. Locket found himself as the coach of his own son’s football team. To make this even more surprising, it wasn’t before long that Mr. Locket had worked his way up to becoming the chairman of the whole club!
“I was just a parent” says Steve. “I brought my son as a player... I took the team on and I'm still here coaching and as a chairman”. While some may have doubted Steve’s ability to run a Football Club, he made it very apparent he was giving his all. “I put in on average 16 hours a week doing various tasks” he states. “This includes admin behind the scenes as well as jobs at the club”.
In addition to this sudden burden of responsibility, Steve also had quite the legacy to live up to. Dean’s Youth & Ladies was started in 1964 by one Dennis Schofield, who had strong ties to world-famous professional player Ryan Giggs and even helped him start his career at Manchester United!
But Steve has never let these expectations get the better of him. “I see the club becoming one of the best clubs in Salford, keeping its size and identity...” Steve proudly proclaims. After everything he has done for the club, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that Steve’s continued work and vision of the club will take it to great heights, with him along with it.
