A Secondary school in Bury is celebrating good results.

Hazel Wood High School in Bury has secured huge improvements in their results.

The school says it has been on a transformational journey over the last few years, and pupils and staff have a lot to celebrate as the government publishes its national ‘league tables’ this week.

Each secondary school receives a ‘progress eight’ figure which measures how much progress students make across eight subjects.

Results this year show that the scores achieved by Hazel Wood reflect a dramatic improvement, moving from the bottom 10 per cent of schools nationally to around average, meaning that the school has made a steep climb up the tables in its ranking against other schools across the country.

Paul Greenhalgh, Head teacher said "I am extremely proud of all the hard work that staff and students have done to achieve these phenomenal results.

“We have worked tirelessly as a team and demonstrated huge resilience in the face of a global pandemic.

“We are all immensely proud of the school we are ensuring our young people are on the right path for an amazing future."

Improvements of this scale are unusual, and they are particularly significant for Hazel Wood High School.

Formerly Broad Oak Sports College, Hazel Wood was sponsored by Oak Learning Partnership Multi Academy Trust following a disappointing Ofsted visit in 2018.

Mr James Franklin-Smith joined Oak Learning Partnership as CEO in September 2021 and set about working in close partnership with Paul Greenhalgh to implement revised staffing structures and educational systems to turn the school’s fortunes around and bring pupils the results they deserved.

Mr Franklin-Smith has proven expertise in school improvement, driving improvement in schools in two other trusts as an executive and head teacher.

Mr Franklin-Smith said: “The school has shown a steep trajectory of improvement. As CEO I’m very proud of Paul, our staff and our students.

“These results are evidence of the impact of changes put in place to improve the school.

“Results will continue to improve in the years to come.”

Visitors have commented on the calm, purposeful and friendly atmosphere at Hazel Wood.

Hazel Wood prides itself on being a vibrant school which is proud to play a part in its diverse local community with charity work and other forms of engagement with the people who surround it.

The school’s staff, and pupils are confident that its successes will continue to grow.
