A man badly injured his friend in the street after a drink and drugs fuelled argument, a court has heard.
Jamie Hodgson, 33, had been spending the day of January 29 having stolen bottles of vodka to buy heroin and crack cocaine with.
But it was after taking drugs and drinking vodka with his friend Mark Turner that an argument between them escalated into a vicious and prolonged assault in the street, Minshull Street Crown Court heard.
Presenting CCTV footage to the court Joe Allman, prosecuting, said: “Mr Hodgson can be seen taking off his jacket as if in effect asking for a fight.
The footage showed Hodgson, of Chesham Fold Road, Bury, pushing Mr Turner to the ground on Massey Street, Bury, leaving and then returning to repeatedly stamp on him.
Mr Allman explained that the pair had gone to Mr Turner’s home and that the argument came about when he told Hodgson, who has 59 previous convictions for 111 offences, that he did not want him to stay over.
Mr Turner left in the hope that by the time he got back Hodgson would be gone, only to find him still there when he returned.
Both were intoxicated and the next Mr Turner remembered he had woken up in hospital with broken bones and was told he had been found lying in the street with blood on his face.
Hodgson was arrested on February 9 and denied responsibility until being confronted with the CCTV footage.
He eventually pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.
Describing the effects on the victim, Mr Allred said: “He says he’s constantly looking over his shoulder and trusts people less after what his friend did to him.”
Mr Allred admitted that Mr Turner had not suffered permanent injuries but said that this showed the long term effect that the attack had had on him.
Mark Shanks, defending, pointed out there was a ‘difference of opinion’ on how the argument started but said Hodgson now fully accepts responsibility for his actions on deserved credit for pleading guilty.
He told the court that Hodgson had a long history of mental health difficulties and alcohol and drug problems, which he has since been working to address.
Mr Shanks argued it was ‘to his credit’ that Hodgson had put a bottle down before attacking Mr Turner, when he could have used it to injure him even more severely.
He said: “He’s going to be in and out of prison for the rest of his life if something doesn’t change, he doesn’t want that.”
Recorder Matthew Corbett-Jones accepted that Hodgson had endured a challenging background.
Addressing Hodgson, he said: “I recognise that you have a complex background in relation to the difficulties in relation to your early life which have led to your addictions to alcohol and drugs.”

But he felt that Hodgson’s actions were all the more serious because of his long record of previous
convictions and the ‘persistent’ nature of the assault.
Recorder Corbett-Jones sentenced Hodgson to a total of two years in prison.
