Bury residents are being asked to have their say as part of an MP's new campaign to improve Bury’s Metrolink services.

Bury North MP James Daly, is lanching the campaign with one of the key proposals being for the tram services between the town and Manchester to run later into the night.

The service first opened back in 1992 and has become an integral part of the transport network.

Despite this, over the past year, there have been multiple line failures in the Bury area, leaving passengers disgruntled with the reliability of the network.

He is asking for residents thoughts after being contacted by a number of residents with similar problems.

Mr Daly said: “With the last tram from Manchester to Bury now departing at 11.46pm, even on the weekend, a number of people have mentioned to me that this should be later if we are to encourage the nighttime economy in Bury and make life easier when people do head to the city centre.

“This spurred me to seek people’s views on not only the operating hours but the wider service as it is a large part of Bury’s local economy and the daily lives of many of my constituents.

"The Metrolink has had a positive impact on our town in its three decades of operation, but we must ensure the service is further improved for the people of Bury.”

Sharing her view, commuter Jasmine Jones, 22, added: “I think the trams should run later as having to get a taxi between Bury and Manchester puts people off going out late.

“The trams feel safer and are much quicker than getting a bus, but because the service stops, most people have to pay for the taxi, which is far too expensive.”

With 26m passenger journeys made last year this is a keyway of getting around for people across the region, however, this is down from a peak of 44 million before the pandemic.
