Hundreds of Muslims celebrated the birthday of the holy Prophet Muhammad in Bury at the weekend, chanting respects and gathering in a town centre procession.

Around 500 people, including the borough mayor, Cllr Shaheena Haroon, and fellow councillors are said to have attended the celebration as multiple faiths gathered at the Islamic Centre on Church Street, on Sunday, October 9.

Liaqat Ali, who took part in the procession, said: “Up to 500 people of multiple faiths joined the procession including the Mayor, leader of Bury Council and other councillors.”

In a video, posted on YouTube, celebrators can be seen walking the streets chanting and celebrating.

Liaqat added: “The people were chanting the slogan in respect of our Holy Prophet, peace be upon him.

“Children enjoyed the event too and everyone was served with soft drinks and food.

“It was a great success for Bury which held this huge multi-faith event.”

Although this was an Islamic celebration, it was open to all the public, and many could be seen outside the front of their homes cheering the parade on.

The procession began on Church Street followed by Wash Lane, York Street, Rochdale Road, Heywood Street, Parkhills Road and Wellington Road.
