A golf club is celebrating success after its ladies’ team defended an important regional title.

Walmersley Golf Club retained the Bell Cup title at an annual competition hosted by the Manchester and District Ladies Golf Association (MDLGA).

Fighting back from three down, the team beat Prestbury in the final match which went down to the 18th hole, where Julie Lyddon of Walmersley took the team to victory.

The team were one of 70 clubs to take part in the competition, which was held on on Friday, September 2.

Walmersley Golf Club manager Steven Lowe said: “We are really proud of what we have achieved.

“Thanks to all the ladies who have given their time and the commitment.

“They’ve had to sacrifice hours of their life away from family to play for us so its greatly appreciated.”

The Manchester and District Ladies Golf Association, founded in 1902, have organised the Bell Cup competition since 1911 and it is one of the biggest Inter Club Ladies Team Knock Out competitions in the country.

Following the team’s win, Steven also thanked all those who supported the club throughout the championship.

He said: “We are extremely proud of the team and what they have achieved, for such a small section of ladies it really is an incredible feat.

“We would like to thank Rossendale Golf Club and their staff for hosting the finals day the members of Walmersley Golf Club who provided fantastic support on the day of the competition.

“A final thanks must go out to the MDLGA officials for their hard work over the many months leading to the final and on the day.”
