Bury Council is set to mark the death of the Queen involving the public in a number of ways as the nation begins a period of mourning.

Union flags on civic buildings are to be flown at half-mast until 8am on the morning following the state funeral.

A books condolence will be opened for members of the public to pay their respects with the Mayor of Bury, Coun Shaheena Haroon expected to be the first person to sign it.

The Mayor has  led the tributes in the borough.

She said: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and I know that my sadness will be shared across Bury.

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was our longest-reigning monarch and gave a lifetime of service to the people of the country.

“Our borough flags will be flown at half-mast and books of condolence opened for the Bury community to visit and share their feelings at this sad time.

“There will be opportunities in the near future for the people of our town to come together and offer comfort to one another. For now, my thoughts are with all those who are deeply affected by Her Majesty’s sad passing.”

Books of condolence which will likely be at Bury Town Hall and other civic buildings in the borough.

The books of condolence will be closed at the end of the working day following the day of the state funeral.

The books will then be placed in archive and a letter written to Buckingham Palace informing them of the location of the books.

A civic service of remembrance will be arranged to bring local people together before the state funeral.

There will be a two minute silence at noon on the day of the funeral led by the mayor.

An area where the public can lay flowers in tribute to the Queen will be opened at a location likely to be either Kay Gardens or Whitehead Gardens.
