Bury CE High School is celebrating achieving record results despite students facing challenges throughout their time at school.

Students nervously waited outside the school hall before they were allowed in at 10am to find out their results and many achieved everything they needed to move on to their next step in education.

Bury Church headmaster Simon Braithwaite said: “We’re absolutely delighted by the achievement of our young people.

“If you think about what they’ve been through in the last three years, they’ve faced incredible challenges but what they’ve shown is incredible resilience and we are delighted with our results.

“We’ve actually had record results as a school against the backdrop of all the challenges our young people have faced so we couldn’t be happier.

“We’ve got some incredible individual results but collectively, the year group has done phenomenally well, and they are all going on to their choices of what they want to do in the future so we can’t be happier than that.”

We spoke to some students who discussed their results and their time at Bury Church.

Nathan Chikwama, head boy, said: “My time here was amazing, my teachers were so helpful and so encouraging and getting the results that I have I’m so happy.

“I was most proud of my English literature result, I’m one mark off a 7 so I’m hoping to get that remarked.

“Being head boy was so easy for me because I had the likes of Mr Braithwaite helping me out. It’s been great.

“My next steps now are to go to sixth form. I’m hoping to go to a private school to try and get good A-level grades and then move onto university and then a masters.”

Jocelyn Graham, head girl said: “I got 9s in history, maths, biology and English and the 8s in RE, chemistry and physics.

“I’ve loved my time at Bury Church, I couldn’t have asked for a better high school it was amazing.

“Being head girl was brilliant, there was so much to learn from that as well.

“I know it’s results day, and everyone is talking about grades, but high school is so much more than that and so many more lessons have come out of it, it was really amazing. It was so good to work with Mr Braithwaite in his first year without Covid too.”

When speaking about if she expected her grades she said: “I was hoping so, I worked pretty hard this year to get them.

“I’m now going on to Rochdale Sixth Form to do four A-levels in maths, biology, chemistry and politics.”

Student Harvey Severs achieved amazing results.

He said: “My best results were getting 9s in history, biology, chemistry and food preparation. I got 8s in everything else except English Literature.

“My time at Bury Church was good, I don’t think there could have been a better school.

“I’m going onto Rochdale Sixth Form to do biology, chemistry and French at A-level.”

Isabel Howarth was waiting to open her results but spoke about what she was hoping for.

She said: “I wasn’t expecting good results at all because I was really stressed but I think that might just have been a mindset thing so I’m quite excited.

“My time at Bury Church was good but very stressful because of Covid but other than that it’s actually been fine, and I’ve had some really nice teachers that I really like, and it’s been very positive.

“I’m going to Rochdale Sixth Form to do A-levels in English literature, history and film studies and I’d like to do law at university.”

Students Theo Pursall spoke about his achievements saying: “I somehow managed to get a 9 in English Literature and I got 8s in science and maths which means I’ll be able to get into college.

“My time at Bury Church was good and I’ve headed off with my results, which I wasn’t expecting to be so good in everything.

“I’m going on to Holy Cross College to do maths, physics and chemistry and then do engineering at university.”
