Prestwich celebrated its first ever community Pride event in style last weekend.
The inaugural Prestwich Pride, took place on Saturday, August 13, and saw the village community came out in force to celebrate love and inclusivity.
The grassroots event, put together by a group of friends from the Prestwich area, began with humble expectations but soon attracted significant attention as businesses, artists, and councillors all lent a hand, providing donations and raffle prizes.
A number of businesses also sported windows from local artist and philanthropist Myroslava Coates, ‘Myrodoodles’, who designed a bespoke look for the event in exchange for donations directly to George House Trust, the group’s chosen charity.
Pride fever was catching, with many more businesses sporting Pride decorations in solidarity and celebration of the event.
On Saturday, events at Cuckoo on Bury New Road began with family crafts and facepainting before local DJs took to the decks, spinning the perfect Pride soundtrack throughout the day and well into the night, much to the crowd’s delight.
Phil Sanders, Jonny Mangas of Beat Boutique, and Jane, ‘JJ’, from DJ collective Take Me To Church lent their time and talent for free, all in aid of George House Trust.
The music was punctuated with a brilliant performance from Manchester drag artist and visual performer Banksie who regaled punters with renditions of Pride classics and cabaret.
Cuckoo’s events culminated on Monday night with a screening of Matthew Warchus’s ‘Pride’ film, complete with their signature cocktails, providing the perfect end to a weekend’s worth of celebrations.
Events were captured by Charlie Hughes behind the camera (@wambamphotography), yet another local resident who offered up their skills for free to support the charitable cause.
As a result of the community’s generosity, Prestwich’s donations have already smashed the £,3000 barrier, a staggering achievement, with the final count set to take place at the end of this month.
