Burrs Country Park has been nominated as a UK favourite park of 2022.
The park, located off Woodhill Road, Bury, has been listed as a nominee and votes are being taken online to determine the winner of the Fields in Trust competition.
Described as "a haven for wildlife with the river Irwell running through it" the popular space has been commended for its kayaking facilities, café and spaces for picnics, runs, dogs and walks.
The park covers an area that housed the mill complex of the Burr and Higher Woodhill cotton mills with the old Burrs Mill chimney, floor and water wheel pit still situated in the park.
It was acquired by Bury Council in 1986 before being transformed from a derelict industrial site into a modern country park.
Since the renovation, it has received the "Much Loved" award from Fields in Trust’s best park competition and a green flag accreditation in 2007/8.
Cllr Alan Quinn, the council's cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “Burr's Country Park is one of the most popular parks in our region, and has held the Green Flag since 2005.
"You can camp there, walk there, enjoy the Lampost Cafe or have a drink at the Brown Cow. Or you can just sit back and enjoy the woodland and nature!
“I'd like to thank the Friends of Burrs and The Sunnywood Project and Martin Profitt for their tremendous support and contribution to Burrs.
"Bury's small team of council officers continue to look after our parks despite 12 years of austerity.
"This nomination is a testament to their enthusiasm and dedication, and the tremendous efforts of the volunteer groups who put in many hours to make Burrs the success it is.”
Elton Cllr Jack Rydeheard has shared the good news on Facebook and has since said: "It's fantastic to see Burrs being recognised for what it is, and I encourage everyone to vote in this year's Fields in Trust UK’s Favourite Parks competition.
"Burrs Country Park is an absolutely brilliant park that is at the heart of the community. Not only does it offer a link to our industrial past, but it is also a fantastic place for people from across Bury to enjoy.
"Burrs is competing against parks and green spaces nationally, so please do lend Elton's brilliant park your vote!"
Anyone looking to vote for the park can click here before Thursday 18th August or click here to see what other areas have been nominated.
