TRIBUTES have poured in after the death of a Tottington High School teacher.

History teacher, Morar Ashburner, died "suddenly but peacefully" at her home in Tottington on Sunday, March 27 aged 50.

Former pupils and the Laurel Street school have paid tribute to Mrs Ashburner, who will be remembered for her "lovely nature".

She was also a much-loved mum, wife, and friend.

One of her former pupils, Tahlia Greenhalgh, said: “I was devastated to hear about Mrs Ashburner’s passing, she was an exceptional history teacher and an utterly lovely woman.

“During my time at Tottington High School, Mrs Ashburner did so much for my education, nothing was ever too much trouble.

“She made history so interesting and encouraged every student to reach their potential in a way that suited them.

“I am sure many pupils can agree, the school won't be the same without her.”

Friend of Morar, Claire Rafferty, remembers how nice a person Mrs Ashburner was.

She said: “I have known her since I was 11-years old.

"She was unassuming, kind, thoughtful, funny and one of the best listeners.

“She also had this wonderful smile and her charm shone through even in photographs.”

In a statement, Tottington High School said: “A very dear member of our school staff, Mrs Morar Ashburner, has passed away very suddenly at home.

“Needless to say, staff are in complete shock and we know that many of our students will be affected by this tragic news.

“Mrs Ashburner was very, very popular with our students. She was a dedicated, professional, warm and caring person and she was an exceptional teacher.

“When someone passes away, young people can react in a number of ways and, rest assured, we will do all we can today, and every day, to help, guide and support them through this.

“Our thoughts are with Mrs Ashburner’s family and friends at this time.

"We will be in touch, in due course, about how we will remember and give thanks for Mrs Ashburner’s life and her unique contribution to our school community.”

Morar attended Bury Grammar from four years old until sixth form before having her first son and going back to university.

From here, she used her charm, skills, and tenacity to finish her degree and begin working as a teacher at Radcliffe High School before moving to Tottington.

Morar also spent lots of her time as a member, organising and coaching at Tottington St Johns Cricket Club, which released a statement saying: “It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely death of Morar Ashburner.

“Taken way too soon, Morar was an extremely well-loved member and supporter of our cricket club as well as a highly respected teacher at Tottington High School.

“Our thoughts are with Marc, Ryan and Danny as the whole club and community mourn one of their own.

“She will be missed dearly by all her friends and family.”
