BURY North MP James Daly has raised concerns that changes to a junction in Bury is causing traffic problems.

The junction on Angouleme Way that leads into the town used to be two lanes but has recently been reduced to one.

One of the lanes has become a filter to take cars down towards Bury College.

It was changed to create a better crossing facility for cyclists and pedestrians, including Bury College students.

However, concerns have been aired that the change has caused more long queues and congestion of motorists getting into the town centre.

On social media, Conservative MP James Daly recorded a video at the junction showing a build up of traffic.

He said: “There’s lots of traffic stood still and to me it’s nuts.

“It’s not encouraging the free flow of traffic its part of some transport infrastructure design locally which I find frankly baffling.”

The MP is urging the public to give their views on what they think about the junction and most of the opinions have been negative.

The politician added there are big issues regarding the clean air zone at the moment, and we need to have transport infrastructure working to support people to get about their business, not as a way to increase congestion and increase emissions and just cause problems.

He said: “It doesn’t need to be like this.

“I think this is a major major problem.”

In response, the council said the main reason for the change was to protect the 5,948 Bury College students and the 2,600 Holy Cross Students.

Cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations at the council, Cllr Alan Quinn, said: “A lot of those children will cross that crossing to get to the Metrolink and the interchange and our overriding concern is the safety of pedestrians.

“I’m bothered about the health of those youngsters, and I’m bothered about the health of students crossing one of the busiest roads in Bury.

“It’s nothing to do with the clean air zone, that’s a distraction from James Daly.

“Nearly 9,000 young lives go to that college and a lot of them will use that crossing.

“When people are complaining, are they not bothered about young lives?”
