Bury AFC Women are holding a charity football tournament to raise money for Bury women’s refuge through the charity Fortalice.
The tournament is being held to celebrate International Women’s Day that was earlier this week, also to promote women in sport especially women’s football and to promote the non-profit HerGameToo movement which fights against sexism in football.
The vice chair of the Elite Women’s team, Casey Lynchey has organised this event and over 70 members of the club of all ages and abilities will be taking part in a six a side tournament to help raise money.
Charlene Barnett, Club Secretary (Bury AFC Women Recreational) said: “Women’s football has always been put on the backburner.
“Since we affiliated with Bury AFC in 2019 we have seven recreational women’s teams and the first and reserves teams as well.
“We wanted to hold the tournament as part of a celebration of that as well as HerGameToo and we wanted a women’s charity like Fortalice to again further promote women.”
World Football Freestyling Champion, Liv Cooke will also be attending and will be helping to present the big cheque to Fortalice at the end of the tournament.
The event will start at 6pm at Goshen Sports Centre and there will be 12 teams competing in the tournament from 6pm – 8pm.
People can donate through the club and there is information on the Bury AFC Women social media pages. Also people can turn up tomorrow evening to spectate and donate too.
