COUNCILLORS from across Bury raised the flag yesterday in solidarity for those in Ukraine.

It follows on from the evolving crisis in Ukraine, where this morning Russia unleashed a wave of attacks on Ukraine, targeting airfields and fuel facilities, in what appeared to be the next phase of an invasion that has been slowed by fierce resistance.

Councillors and supporters came together outside Bury's town hall, including members of the Ukrainian Club.

Chair of the club, Stefan Harhaj, has described it as a 'critical situation', with as much support as possible needed from people.

Cllr Richard Gold, Bury Council Cabinet Member For Communities, said: "I stand in full solidarity with the people of Ukraine in the face of a brutal invasion.

"We will help and support our local Ukrainian Community however we can."

In a Tweet, cllr Eamonn O'Brien said: "I stand with our Ukrainian community across Bury in condemning the invasion of Ukraine by Putin.

"This will be an extremely difficult time for them and their families, so let's show our solidarity in unequivocally condemning this war on Ukraine."

Items are also urgently needed for those on the frontline and on the Polish Borders.

They are in need of foil survival blankets, toys, nappies, sanitary towels, sleeping bags, metal cups, and thermal clothing.

They are not accepting any cash or medication.

Collections can be dropped off at the Polish Club, East Street, Bury, from Monday- Friday from 7:30-9:30pm.
