Of all the proposals to find a home for Bury AFC, the proposal to acquire Market Street Athletics Track beggars belief. I accept the need for a location in Bury but this venue has always been for amateur athletics.
Its proximity to the town centre was a big help when I used the bus to attend training sessions from as early as 1971. Then there was not even a cinder track. Now there is a well maintained tartan track and all the facilities to stage athletic events.
Putting a football stadium here instead would create serious congestion and the site would be far too small to accommodate parking etc. The report in the Bury Times mentions nothing about those dedicated athletes who have used this venue over the years. Neither is there any mention about what would happen to the athletics track. I, for one, do not see any merit in the proposal.
