THERE were scenes of joy and jubilation as Bury Grammar School (BGS) students celebrated another year of incredible A Level results.
The Class of 2020, who two years ago secured the school's best GCSE grades in a generation, exceeded all expectations as they earned top grades after a challenging year.
Once again the school enjoyed a 100 per cent pass rate and more than half of students had A*s and As on their results slips.
The majority of all grades met the school's 'gold standard' of A* to B and many of its students will now be heading off to study at some of the UK's most prestigious universities.
Jo Anderson, BGS principal, said: ‘Many congratulations to the stunning class of 2020 – we could not be more proud of your academic achievements over the last two years nor of the people you have become.
"An outstanding year group, you thoroughly deserve outstanding A Level grades."
"All of us at BGS have loved working with you and we wish you all the very best – you are a generation we will never forget," she added.
Among the school's star students was Will Mau, who achieved four A*s.
He will now go on to study Mathematics at the University of Warwick.
Also off to read Mathematics is Conor McCay, one of the school's several successful Oxbridge applicants, who landed a place at St. Anne’s, University of Oxford.
There was further Oxbridge joy for former head girl, Isobel Lewis, who will be studying History and English at St. Peter's, Oxford.
Meanwhile Henry Batchelor is set to study Computer Science at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge.
Places at Durham University await both Bethany Bangbala and Dylan Buckley — who will read Philosophy and Theology, and Economics, respectively.
Meanwhile, three BGS students have won places to read Law.
Meliyah Khan is heading to King’s College London, Dylan McKenzie will be studying at Leeds University and Scarlet Kearns at Liverpool John Moores.
Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science also proved to be popular course for BGS students.
Adam Penlington is going Newcastle University to study Medicine, and Ifeoluwa Motunrayo Dare will both study Dentistry Adil Khatab at the Universities of Leeds and Cardiff respectively.
Other high flyers were head girl, Olivia Moriarty, who will study Journalism at Newcastle University, and deputy head girl, Molly Whitlow, who is reading Neuroscience at Bristol University.
Music and the arts also had a good showing with Mathew Jones, Fadil Ali, Hope Hewart and Benjamin Power going on to study Architecture, Animation and Graphic Design respectively.
Moreover, Jay Broadhurst and Olivia Groves both gained places on Music and Musical Theatre courses.
Devin Cassidy, BGS vice principal, said: "I warmly congratulate all of our Year 13 students on their achievements and also for the way in which they have dealt with the last five months which cannot have been easy.
"I know that our students really wanted to sit their exams to show what they are capable of but sadly this was not possible.
"I know that they appreciate that their learning whilst at school will remain with them for life and will equip them to deal confidently with the challenges that lie ahead, at university and beyond.
"I wish them the very best for the future and know that they will keep in touch as Bury Grammar School will always be their school."
