AFTER reading the article in the Bury Times last week (July 26) regarding the proposed development of an eight-bed residential care home on Kirklees Street, Tottington, for people with learning difficulties, I would like to respond.

After working in the care industry for more than 20 years I understand and have witnessed the many benefits for clients supported in a unit like that proposed.

The care, support and experiences that an individual receives throughout their stay enhances and improves dramatically their quality of life.

These individuals, through no fault of their own, are in an unfortunate position that they need care and support to enable them to move from a supported living environment to independent living.

They have to contend with the unnecessary stigma and sometimes humiliation that other individuals bestow on them.

Learning disabilities relates to individuals who aren't able to deal with normal day-to-day life activities without added support and guidance from dedicated individuals. They pose no threat to any neighbourhood and should be treated with the same dignity and respect that those opposed to the development would expect to receive from their local community.

I only hope that anyone opposed to this unit is never in the situation where they or their families require assistance of this nature.
