THE number of firefighters injured while on duty in the borough has doubled.

Ten officers at the three fire stations in Bury, Whitefield and Ramsbottom suffered injuries between April 2006 and March of this year - an increase of five from the previous 12-month period.

Accidents ranged from slipping on floors to being struck by objects. It resulted in 18 working days being lost due to sick leave. Bury crews reported the least number of accidents while Manchester North fire service had the highest with 32 incidents.

Across Greater Manchester, there were a total of 257 on-duty accidents resulting in 1,445 working days lost compared to 4,940 days six years ago. County fire officer Barry Dixon said: "Considerable resources have been applied to poster campaigns and specific training in workplace assessments, manual handling and display screen equipment, which has resulted in improvements in the service's health and safety management. The implications on personnel from the reduction of accidents are that the service benefits from having a fitter, healthier workforce."
