RADCLIFFE Athletic Club's Anna Lupton was on top form when she triumphed in the Turnslack Fell Race - finishing only seven seconds outside the ladies' course record.

Lupton ran the eight-mile event at Littleborough on Saturday, in its 30th year, in one hour and 17 seconds to finish 42nd overall in a field of 135.

Three Radcliffe members completed the course, probably the toughest in the area with 2,000 feet of climbing; Mark Cartwright (V40) coming home in 1.26 and Sheila McNulty (V60) 1.35.

It was the fifth race in the grand prix series organised by Radcliffe, Rochdale, Rossendale and Middleton clubs, and was also a Radcliffe club championship race.

On the road, Simon Bruton continued his high placings when he finished seventh out of 191 runners in the Horwich Jubilee five-mile road race. He recorded a superb time of 27.02.

The event, another Radcliffe road championship race, saw a fine turnout with 12 members taking part. Adrian Harris (V50) was 45th in 31.09 and Dave Bartlett 63rd in 33.01. Stephen Davies (V50) ran 34.22; Mark Emmett (V45) 36.51; Jim Sutcliffe (V40) 37.19; Paula Abernethy (V40) 38.06; Berin Jones 39.18; Yasmin Parapia 39. 31; Kathryn Davies (V40) 39.49; Rachel Stoney 40. 14 and Denise Sutcliffe 47.50. The men came seventh in the team event.

Meanwhile, the Joan Rhodes and Fred Norris Memorial 5k road race will be held at the Masons Arms in Radcliffe on August 2, at 7 15pm. There will be prizes in all categories.

The event is in aid of St Ann's Hospice and organiser Jim Rhodes has all the details on 0161 723 5947. Entries will be accepted on the night.
