THE sun - remember that? - finally burst through the miserable summer to shine on Radcliffe's first community day and inter-estate rounders tournament.

Hundreds of residents went to Close Park on Saturday for a day of sporting, artistic and informative events.

The rounders competition, hosted by Six Town Housing (STH), attracted six teams: five from tenant and resident associations in Radcliffe, plus one from local Labour councillors and their families. The winners were Bolton Road TRA, who beat St Thomas's in the final. They pocketed a trophy and medals and £250 from STH to spend on an environmental project on their estate, while Bury and District Rounders League provided the referees.

Other attractions included a children's entertainer, community artist, face painter, and sports taster sessions, plus bouncy castle, DJ and tombolas, while the police offered free bike marking.

Funding for the day came through the new Radcliffe Local Area Partnership (LAP) and among the guests was the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Farook Chaudhry.

Donna Cartwright, STH community involvement officer, said: "It was fantastic! Not only did the weather hold off, but I got a bit sunburned.

"It went so well and everyone, young and old, really enjoyed it. I'd like to thank everyone involved in putting the day together, and we must have another one next year, even bigger. From the health aspect alone, it was good to get Radcliffe people out and trying something different and positive."
