A YEAR-long wait has ended for single mum Karen Goulding after damp in her young daughter's bedroom was finally tackled.

Karen, of Broad Oak Lane, Bury, feared conditions in the bedroom were making five-year-old Victoria ill.

The 36-year-old said she lost her job because of having to take time off work to nurse her daughter through repeated chest infections.

For six months she put her daughter to bed on a mattress in the living room at her council-owned house because the cold and damp in the youngster's bedroom was so severe.

The necessary work was completed last week after the Bury Times made inquiries about the situation to management organisation Six Town Housing, although Karen said she first asked for officers to deal with the problem 12 months ago.

She said: "I left it after I got no response but the problem got worse in the winter and in January Victoria ended up in hospital with a chest infection.

"Every time she gets a cold it develops into a chest infection - it's not surprising considering the cold and damp and the fungus all over the ceiling.

"It was frightening having to go to hospital and I decided that it was too much.

"I've been on at them to get the work done ever since. She needs her bedroom. It's been horrible for her having to sleep on the floor in the living room."

Six Town Housing had the chimney re-pointed last month but said that Karen could have to wait until the end of the year for roof insulation.

However, the work was carried out last week after the Bury Times brought the issue to the attention of Six Town Housing. A spokesperson for Six Town Housing confirmed that roof insulation had been installed on Friday.

She said: "I have spoken to the Repairs Manager. He has informed me that he has looked into this case and agrees it should have been dealt with sooner."

A fungicidal wash is still to be completed, having been delayed after the discovery of a wasp nest in the property. Environmental health officers were due to deal with the wasps this week.
