GAS works will bring traffic disruption to the northern end of Bury town centre.

Major excavations are needed at the junction of Moorgate, The Rock, Peel Way and Walmersley Road, as National Grid Gas Alliance replaces the old cast-iron gas mains.

Eastbound traffic on Peel Way will be unable to continue across into Moorgate, while northbound traffic on The Rock will be prohibited from turning right into Moorgate, although the right turn into the Moorgate Retail Park will not be affected. Drivers heading southbound on Walmersley Road will be blocked from entering The Rock.

The alternative route for all these will be signed via Walmersley Road and St Mark's Square. Traffic from Bury Bridge heading towards Rochdale will be advised to use Jubilee Way, Angouleme Way and Rochdale Road rather than Moorgate, Bell Lane and Rochdale Old Road.

A council spokesman said the work had been planned to coincide with the summer school holidays, although delays are inevitable.
