HOUSEBOUND people in Bury are £330,000 better off thanks to the local Citizens Advice Bureau.

The service, which has been funded by Bury Council since 2003, makes home visits to ill people and those with caring responsibilities.

The money raised comes from helping residents claim the benefits to which they are entitled but don't know about, or helping with appeals against decisions to reduce or stop benefits.

David Bevitt, chief officer of Bury District CAB, said: "We are really proud of this service. Not only does it help the individuals, it brings more money into the borough and helps Bury's fight for greater government funding by demonstrating some of the hidden needs in the community.

"As well as our offices at Radcliffe and Prestwich, we provide all sorts of outreach services with our partners in the community in NHS settings, throughout East Bury and at the Seedfield centre. We just hope we can continue with this work when the current funding runs out next March."

The service can be contacted on 0845 1203757 or at Prestwich CAB, 7 Fairfax Road, Prestwich M25 1AS. A new outreach service in Ramsbottom Library is due to start in September.
