PEOPLE from Bury travelling into Manchester are being advised to check that their journeys will not be affected by new water mains being laid.

United Utilities is carrying out an £8 million scheme to upgrade the 100-year-old cast iron water mains with new plastic pipes which will give the city a network fit for the 21st century. Much of the two-year project will not have an impact on traffic as it will take place in side streets.

But when the pipes under major routes such as Oxford Road and Deansgate are replaced, there will be delays for motorists. The work will take place across the city centre.
