THREE new play areas for children will be created in Bury after the council won nearly £430,000 from the Lottery.

And further projects are on the way for youngsters with few opportunities for leisure under a strategy called bury@play.

Landscaped play areas will be built near Goldfinch Drive on the Chesham Fold estate, and on land outside Redvales Children's Centre on the Springs estate.

A sensory garden with a 15-foot luminous snake, accessible equipment and a sandpit, will be built at the Re:d Centre in Morley Street.

The strategy will include a year-round network of mobile community play workers, while park rangers will run outdoor activities in the holidays.

Councillor Diana Ashworth, executive member for children and young people, said: "Play is one essential way children come to understand themselves and the world around them.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for young children and their families, and the granting of lottery funding is proof that our projects are worthy of national recognition."

Work is due to start in September.
