TRIBUTES have been paid to six-year-old pupil Mason Jones who died after being hanged in a freak accident.

Mason was playing with his twin sisters in a bedroom at their family home in Walmersley Road on Friday evening when a game involving a skipping rope went tragically wrong.

Paramedics and doctors battled for nearly an hour to resuscitate the youngster but he was pronounced dead a short time later at Fairfield General Hospital.

His parents and sisters are devastated by the tragedy and are being comforted by friends and relatives.

Mason's Mum Jenny Jones said: "Mason was a lovely little man who touched so many people's lives. He truly was wonderful, and lit up a room with his gorgeous smile.

"He was big for his age so we used to call him our little man. He was such a popular boy who made friends very easily. I could really talk forever about what a fantastic son he was, but it won't bring him back.

"Me, his Dad, his little twin sisters and his big sister will miss him more than words can say."

An investigation has been launched by police to establish how the accident happened. Detectives say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the boy's tragic death.

The case has now been passed to the coroner.

Mason was a pupil at St Joseph and St Bede's RC Primary School in Danesmoor Drive, Bury.

The headteacher of the school, Sue McAvady, said: "The school community was stunned to hear of the tragic death of Mason at the weekend. Mason loved school and had many friends. He was a happy boy and was always smiling.

"He will be very much missed by us all and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends"

Special prayers have been said at the family's parish church, St Joseph's RC Church.
