TWO boys had to be rescued after becoming trapped on an island in the swollen River Irwell.
The youngsters, aged 12 and 13, jumped from a bridge on to a mud island in the river to retrieve a baseball cap but were unable to climb back up. The fast flowing water prevented their escape on foot. One of the boys raised the alarm on his mobile phone.
Fire fighters turned out to Warth Bridge off Radcliffe Road, Bury, at 5pm on Saturday. They lowered a ladder from the bridge to the boys and escorted them to safety.
