A TEENAGER was arrested by police after masked thugs armed with a machete and an axe threatened a man outside his home.

The 16-year-old was detained after five men ran from a Mazda car used in the incident in Second Avenue, Bury, at 8pm on Tuesday.

Detectives say three men approached the 52-year-old man on his driveway and demanded his car keys.

When he refused, one of the thugs kicked the man's dog, causing a cut to its eye.

They ran off and got into the red Mazda 323 which sped away. The victim suffered minor injuries to his neck in the incident.

Police said the Mazda was later seen in the Agecroft area of Salford and police patrol officers followed the car.

The gang then abandoned the vehicle on wasteland off Lower Broughton Road and five masked men ran off. Police managed to catch the 16-year-old who is currently in police custody.

The man with the axe was about 18-years-old, 5ft 9ins tall, of slim build. He was wearing blue jeans, a tracksuit top and had a northern accent.

One of the other offenders was white, 5ft 2ins tall and wore dark clothing. The third offender was white, 15 to 17-years-old, 5ft 6ins tall, of slim build and was wearing dark clothing.
