MORE than 100 residents are fighting plans by the East Lancashire Railway, fearing they could lead to the siting of a second Metrolink stop near their homes.
On Monday night, householders in the Buckley Wells area of Bury came out against the ELR prosal for engineered filling operations at its loco works in Baron Street to accommodate new rail track infrastructure.
Protesters claim the plan could be an "environmental catastrophe" and that the proposal involved landfill on contaminated land not operational for railway use.
Campaign organiser Carl Chrystan, of Barker Street, said: "This will mean the eventual building of a new East Lancs Railway stop, together with coach park, heritage centre and eventually leading to a Metrolink stop; all this put slap bang in the middle of a quiet and strong community located just near Bury town centre.
But ELR director Malcolm Vickers rejects any suggestion that a new Metrolink station was linked to their application.
