Three masked men threatened a man with a machete, an axe and a crowbar as they attempted to steal a car from his drive.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident on Second Avenue, Bury, at about 8pm last night.

The gang approached a man on his driveway and demanded his car keys.

When the 52-year-old victim refused, he was threatened by the gang. One of them kicked the man's dog in the face, cutting its eye.

The offenders then ran off empty-handed, got into a red Mazda 323 and drove away at speed.

The victim suffered minor injuries to his neck in the attack.

The offender with the axe is described as 17-18-years-old, 5ft 9in, of slim build. He was wearing blue jeans, a tracksuit top and had a northern accent.

One of the other offenders is described as white, 5ft 2in and was wearing dark clothing. The third offender is described as white, 15-17-years-old, 5ft 6in of slim build and was wearing dark clothing.

The same Mazda was later seen by police in the Agecroft area of Salford and officers began to follow the car.

There were now five masked offenders in the car and they abandoned the vehicle on wasteland off Lower Broughton Road and ran off on foot.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested and is currently in police custody.

Anyone who may have seen the car driving around last night, or has any information about the incident is asked to call police on 0161 856 8093 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
