RUNNERS and walkers donned bright colours and fancy dress as they raced through woodland in Prestwich.

Art on the Run took place in the newly regenerated Livia Forest, which spans Bury and Salford councils, with more than 500 people taking part earlier this month.

The 5k fun run was organised by Forestry Commission England and Wild Rumpus, producers of the award-winning Just So Festival.

Sarah Bird, director of Wild Rumpus, said: “We were over the moon to welcome a crowd of over 500 people to our inaugural Art On The Run from across the north of England.

“We were overwhelmed by how enthusiastic, colourful and artistic the racers, runners and walkers of all ages were.

“We can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday than running through such a wonderful environment of the Forestry Commission’s Drinkwater Park, immersed in music, art and creativity.”

Families raced through Livia Forest, which is part of the City Forest Park an initiative by City of Trees and the Forestry Commission to create a huge public park in Greater Manchester, bigger than New York’s Central Park.

Trees have been planted across the site to provide a haven for wildlife and an expanse of woodland for residents to enjoy.

Anna Cooper, who took part with her husband, said: “We really enjoyed Art on the Run, definitely the most interesting warm up, great marshalls and a fun atmosphere.

“We’ve also found a great new park near our home to explore.”

Livia is part of the Irwell Sculpture Trail and made up of community woodlands and nature reserves linking Drinkwater Park and Clifton Country Park.

The Forestry Commission England declined to comment because of the upcoming General Election.
