FIRE crews were called out after an elderly woman’s helium balloon ignited.
Appliances from Bury and Whitefield attended the incident in Acresbrook Walk, Tottingham at around 11pm on Monday.
According to crew manager Gavin Doyle, the woman had fallen asleep and woke up to find the small balloon, which was next to her fireplace, on fire.
By the time firefighters had arrived, the fire had been extinguished by the woman after she poured water on it. She was unharmed.
Mr Doyle said: “She was a bit upset and we just gave her some advice and we changed one of her smoke alarms, as we had noticed it was not working.”
He reminded people to make sure they check their smoke alarms regularly.
