THE judges are on their way - and people are being asked to help the town repeat its blooming success.

Bury needs to be at its best on Thursday for North West in Bloom judging and on August 6 for Britain in Bloom judging.

On each occasion, judges will be taken on a three-hour tour to look at the best examples of floral displays, permanent landscaping, conservation, environmental projects and community involvement.

Bury faces opposition from Altrincham, Chorley and Crewe in the regional competition, and will represent the North West region in the national contest competing against Bangor, Durham, Horsham, Rugby and Stevenage. Local people and businesses are asked to spruce up the borough by clearing litter, tidying gardens, recycling more, and reporting waste, graffiti and vandalism to 0161 253 5353 or www.bury.gov.uk/bury/reportaproblem The council would like to hear from anyone carrying out a project that might support Bury in Bloom: call Pat Kelly on 0161 253 5266.

Councillor Dorothy Gunther, executive member for environment and transport, said: "Everyone who lives in, works in, or visits Bury can do their bit to support Bury in Bloom.

"With a wide-ranging initiative such as this, every little bit of effort counts."
