THE hard work of volunteers at Bury Hospice was recognised with a visit from the Mayor and Mayoress of Bury.

Councillor Farook Chaudhry and Mrs Rubina Chaudhry visited the charity in Dumers Lane, Radcliffe, to mark National Volunteers Week.

The were given a tour of the hospice and met staff in all departments.

They then met the oldest, youngest, longest-serving and newest volunteers. The oldest volunteer is 89-year-old Joan Poole, who works as a receptionist, while the youngest volunteer is 17-year-old Ryan Ashworth, who helps in the charity shop in Bury and as a receptionist at the hospice.

The longest-serving volunteer is Annie Howard (88), who works in the hospice shop in Bury, and Katie Shoreham (27) is the newest recruit and offers hairdressing free of charge.

Mervyn Reeves, fundraising manager, said: "We were delighted to greet the mayor and mayoress on their first visit to the hospice, which we hope will be repeated many times. They found the tour of the hospice particularly interesting and they took time out to meet many of the patients and staff while they were there."
