I REFER to Councillor Dorothy Gunther's response to my letter (Blue Bins: Doing the best with available finances') in the Bury Times.

My understanding of Coun Gunther's reply is that, effectively, Bury MBC made the decision to purchase and supply 28,000 blue bins in the full knowledge that the council did not have sufficient funds to provide the same fortnightly collection service that the rest of the borough enjoy.

I note Coun Gunther's point that this decision was made prior to her appointment, but surely the council should have made sure funding was available for the supply and the ongoing service before committing to the project?

An article (Green for go with cardboard recycling') in last week's paper mentions the success of a kerbside cardboard collection pilot scheme, which is now being extended to every household across the borough. Collection period? Every fortnight.

I fully support the borough's recycling initiatives, but their decisions on who has what collected, and when, are selective, unfair, inconsistent and badly thought out.

I respectfully ask the newly-appointed executive member for environment and transport, Coun Gunther, to rectify the poor decisions of her predecessor(s) and approve fortnightly collections of the blue bins for Radcliffe residents.

If you can find the funding for the new cardboard collection scheme then you can surely find funding to provide equality across the borough for the blue bin collection scheme.
