A MAN has died in a car fire in Prestwich.
The driver was travelling along Castle Hill Road at about 3.30pm when the vehicle crashed and burst into flames.
Police have confirmed that the driver died at the scene.
Firefighters and police are currently dealing with the incident and motorists are being urged to avoid the area.
Witnesses described hearing a loud bang, and it is believed there was an explosion in the car.
The deceased is believed to be a man who lives locally and was driving a Volvo at the time of the crash.
A police spokesman said: "Police were called just after 3pm following reports a car was on fire on Castle Hill Road, Prestwich.
"A person was inside the car and has sadly been pronounced dead at the scene.
"Inquiries are ongoing between police and the fire service to establish the circumstances of how the fire started."
