Nimble-footed pupils at a Bury high school wowed audiences with an adaptation of Sleeping Beauty — with help from the experts.

Derby High School were joined for a week by members of Birmingham Royal Ballet who assisted students in staging their own version of the play.

Previously 120 students from the school in Radcliffe Road went to watch members of the ballet perform Sleeping Beauty at The Lowry Theatre in Salford, and pupils took inspiration from that show in their own play entitled Beauty Sleep.

The project, which was funded by the Transformation Trust, saw a number of performers associated with the ballet work with pupils at The Derby as well as partner schools Radcliffe Hall CE/Methodist Primary School, St Andrew’s CE Primary school and St Peter’s CE Primary School.

The show for parents on October 18, which was also attended by members of the local community, was declared a triumph.

Headteacher Alison Byrne said: “Opportunities like this, for many, come once in a lifetime.

“We are proud to be the only school in Bury to give these students that opportunity.”
