A musical tribute to Lee Rigby will be launched at a special event at the Fusilier Museum next month.

Rod Barry and Ian Jenkins, both musicians from Rochdale, have written a song entitled Rest In Peace Brave Fusilier.

A demo version of the track is already available online, but the song will be played in public for the first at the museum in Moss Street, Bury, on Saturday, November 2.

The song will be officially launched during an event with former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, who will be speaking about her new book, and signing copies from 11am to 12.30pm.

Mr Barry explained that, after hearing Fusilier Rigby was from the area, he was compelled to write some lyrics, and then sent them to his songwriting partner Ian to devise a tune.

He said: “I am 67 years old and it affected me more than any death.

“I can’t tell you why but it really broke my heart, the manner of it was heartbreaking, and that is the reason why I wrote the song.”

The pair, who are well known on the pub and club circuit, say they intended to give the song a push around this time of the year, because it was such a poignant time for veterans.

Mr Barry added: “The week after, it is Armistice Day, when we want to pay tribute to Lee because he is a fallen soldier.

“We thought it would be nice for people to have something like this to remember him by during this time.”

The track will be available to purchase online from November 2, and will cost £1.99 with proceeds raised going to the Fusiliers Aid Society, which helps former Fusiliers who have fallen on hard times, as well as bereaved families.

Tickets to the event at the Fusilier Museum cost £6.50, which includes refresh-ments, and are available at the Tourist Information Centre.
