Sunday services at a Bury church are moving — or “movieing” to be exact.
The Freedom Church has been given permission to hold its meetings at the Vue cinema on The Rock and leaders Darren and Kathryn Durham will “premiere” the services this Sunday.
Since 2006, the couple has been among a team of six who have worked towards the growth of the church.
Darren said: “Now, we have a gathering of about 70 or so people each and every week — kids, adults, youth, people of all ages and backgrounds. Just a great gathering of like-minded people committed to the Christian way of life.
“We are all just believers and want to extend a Christian hand to the rest of Bury. There’s no pressure on anyone who comes along.“ Freedom’s current home at an industrial unit in Bright Street has hosted summer clubs for 60 children, and been the base for Summer Sundays in a Bury park which attracted 700 people. Alongside Bury Council, the church offers cold weather provision for the homeless with a warm bed, food and hygiene facilities.
Darren said: “We feel that after seven years of building Freedom, the time is now perfect for us to move out and reach out to many more Bury people. So, we approached Sharon Harris, general manager of Vue Cinema, to discuss holding our Sunday morning meetings there.”
Miss Harris said: “This is as exciting for us as it is for Freedom Church. We have never done anything like this before, but we always try to put something back into our community in Bury. We are looking forward to providing a screen and facilities for Freedom Church, along with a space for the kids.”
Mike Walker, who leads the Freedom band which plays the modern music and songs on Sundays, added: “We’re looking forward to playing in the cinema. It’s a great venue.”
n The service, which is free, takes place at 10.30am.
