A SPECTACULAR film documenting the story of climbers attempting to reach the ridge of a mountain in Antarctica almost 3,000 metres high is to be shown in Ramsbottom.

‘The Last Great Climb’ tells the story of Kendal based climber Leo Houlding and his team, who were attempting to climb the Ulvetanna Peak, in the mountains of Queen Maud Land.

The mountain was only discovered in 1994, and remained unclimbed until their journey. It is regarded as one of the most technically demanding climbs, in one of the world’s harshest environments.

The 2013 film, which was produced by Alastair Lee, received its premiere in London’s Leicester Square earlier this year, and it will now be shown at the Theatre Royal on November 23.

The event is being organised by Jim Metcalf, of Lime Grove, Bury, who is a seasoned climber himself.

Mr Metcalf, aged 66, has climbed in a number of countries including Greenland, Ecuador and Nepal, which he visited in 2011.

He used to work as a planning officer at Bury Council, and is now as a self-employed planning consultant.

Profits raised from the film night will go towards the charity Community Action Nepal, which aims to improve health and education in the country, and he decided to raise money for the group after seeing conditions in Nepal first hand.

The charity was founded in 1975 by Doug Scott, who was the first Englishman to climb Everest.

It works with mountain communities on issues such as providing children with trained teachers, supplying clean water for communities and performing cataract operations to restore sight.

He said: “I thought it would be a great opportunity to show people in Ramsbottom this amazing film and raise some money for a charity which I know about.”
