Bury’s Poppy Appeal has officially been launched.
About 900 boxes will be sent across the town after the appeal was launched by the Mayor of Bury Cllr Sharon Briggs, and Lieutenant Colonel Eric Davidson, honorary Poppy Appeal organiser for Bury.
Organisers are calling on the people of Bury to get behind the cause to raise money for current and former Armed Forces personnel, and have set a target of £50,000. Lt Col Davidson said: “The people of Bury always give very well, and if we can get a full group of people participating in the parade that would be fantastic.”
He said he believed there would be added poignancy to this year’s event after the funeral of Fusilier Lee Rigby took place at Bury Parish Church.
He added: “Since the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan we have a lot of people getting involved and supporting us, and it is a perfect opportunity to remember those we have lost.”
The appeal will culminate in two remembrance events to commemorate the First World War, 99 years ago.
A Remembrance Parade and Church service will take place on Sunday November 10, and those wishing to take part should assemble in Knowsley Street outside the Town Hall’s east entrance at 10.15am.
The parade will start at 10.35am and move to the war memorial outside Bury Parish Church, with acts of remembrance taking place at 11am, followed by a wreath-laying and a service inside the church.
On Armistice Day itself, November 11, services will take place at the war memorial in Market Place and the Gallipoli Garden outside the Fusilier Museum.
