AN inspirational and ever-smiling teenage fundraiser was awarded with the celebration’s highest accolade — the Ultimate Local Hero award.
Thirteen-year-old Josh Wilson was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of three, and following treatment to freeze its growth developed severe neuromuscular disabilities.
Mum Dawn Fidler and Josh’s family, who also won the Family of the Year award, fundraised tirelessly to raise £25,000 for home adaptations which were completed in July.
Josh now gives his name to the Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity to support other children and families dealing with brain tumours and post-surgery disabilities. Josh, known as SuperJosh, requires 24-hour care and can only communicate using signs and facial expressions but his constantly happy disposition has endeared him to many.
Mum Dawn said: “Josh is a hero, he really deserves it. He has got such a magic about him and it is amazing to know he has touched the hearts of so many people.
“Josh is always in pain but he comes out with that massive smile and people just fall in love with him.”
Dawn, who lives in Walshaw, and Josh’s father Colin, of Rochdale Road, Bury, share looking after him, requiring specialist equipment in both their homes.
Since Josh’s diagnosis in 2004, Dawn estimates around £50,000 has been raised, with the Josh Wilson Brain Tumour Charity hoping to raise £20,000 before New Year’s Day.
Dawn said: “Winning family of the year was a massive celebration.
“We had two standing ovations and that was unreal, a beautiful moment.
“At the end of the day we’re just a mum and her boy.”
