DOREEN Grundy and her grandson Max Roscow are proving age is no barrier when it comes to meeting new people, learning fresh skills and helping a good cause.

For at the age of 66, Doreen is the longest serving volunteer at the PDSA shop in Bury and Max, at just 15, is the newest and youngest recruit. They both volunteer at the shop on The Rock and are hoping others will follow their example and give up a little free time.

Both say that in return, there is a confidence boost, lots of fun and the glow from helping a good cause.

Doreen, who has been helping out at the shop for more than 15 years, said: “Initially I did it to gain confidence and meet people. We meet such a huge variety of people in the shop, and there are so many visitors on market days. I also love animals and enjoy the feeling that I am working for a good cause.”

Max, who has been with the team for just eight weeks, added: “I also know it will look good on my CV and help me in the future with job references and I also want to develop people skills.

“I am keen to learn about providing good customer service and merchandising, but most of all I love working for a worthwhile cause and the feeling of doing good.”

The PDSA is a veterinary charity, helping to care for sick pets and provides necessary education about animal care.

The Bury shop is keen to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer, whether for a couple of hours or a couple of days a week.

Manager Carl Gaynor added: “We could not run it without our volunteers, their contribution is vital.”
