CASTLE Leisure Centre users have hit out at “wasted money” after the women’s changing rooms were renovated — even though the building is due to be demolished.

Plans to knock down Castle Leisure Centre and Bury’s former police headquarters and replace them with a supermarket were given the green light last month.

The ladies dry changing rooms have recently seen two toilets replaced by three, new wash basins, new soap dispensers and hand dryers, new lockers, benches and changing cubicles and a new floor.

One woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “They are brand new toilets, and made me think I was in a four-star hotel.

“The walls have been refurbished with beautiful tiling, and there are built-in sinks you would love to have at home.

“It is all very nice — but you have got to question why, when the centre is going to be pulled down.”

Another leisure centre regular added: “The changing room facilities were pretty tatty before, but they were still serviceable.

“Only the lockers really needed replacing, as most of them were not reliably working.”

Bury Council’s proposals could see the leisure centre demolished and replaced by a supermarket within three years.

A new leisure centre will be built in Knowsley Place, opposite the town hall and on top of the Q Park.

A spokesman for Bury Council said the improvements had been carried out in response to comments and feedback from female customers about what is important to them when using the authority’s leisure facilities.

He said the improvements have been funded from the £2.3 million awarded to Bury by Sport England as part of the ‘I will if you will’ campaign to get more women and girls involved in sport.

The spokesman added: “The £29,000 spent on improvements to changing rooms at Castle Leisure Centre kickstarts what will be a huge activity programme taking place at sports centres and many community venues throughout the borough.

“The improvements will also help to sustain Castle Leisure Centre until such time as a developer has been secured.”
