AN UNSWORTH charity worker is urging everyone to follow in her footsteps and ‘Stand Up To Cancer’.

Sarah McPhee, of Prospect Place, who is a cancer survivor, is encouraging people to literally “stand up” and be sponsored on Friday October 18 to boost ground-breaking research into the disease.

Supporters can choose exactly how, when and where they make their stand.

Ideas include: n Staying upright for a full 24 hours.

n Extreme standing, by choosing a weird and wonderful location, like a bath of baked beans.

n Wearing fancy footwear and swapping stilettos for flippers in the office.

The 33-year-old has survived cancer, after first finding a bump above her knee when she was aged 22.

She became increasingly concerned as despite being a keen sportswoman and looking after her health, she was unable to bend her knee and felt permanently exhausted. Sarah’s physiotherapist immediately spotted that the bump above her knee could be serious and she was referred for blood tests.

Sarah, who was in her final year studying fashion management at the London College of Fashion, was devastated when the blood tests revealed she had a relatively rare form of bone cancer.

She faced major surgery to remove a large chunk of bone removed from her leg.

She said: “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer in some way. And I know only too well the impact of the disease.

“This is a real opportunity to make a stand and to help more people survive cancer. That’s why I’m calling on everyone to follow my lead and Stand Up To Cancer.” Last year, Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 joined forces to launch ‘Stand Up To Cancer’ for the first time in the UK and raised a staggering £8 million for cancer charities and research in the UK.
